Sharks a big draw at aquarium store

A new 18,000-square-foot aquarium store has opened in Tamarac, drawing crowds to its weekly Tuesday night shark feedings. Big Al's Aquarium Supercenter, 6820 N. University Dr., is the first
U.S. location for the Canadian chain. The store carries about 4,400 species of fish in 45,000 gallons of aquarium displays. Beyond the shelves of fish
food, a tunnel whose arching ceiling is lit up like a sparkling night sky is bracketed on either side by 20-foot-long tanks, each holding 3,700 gallons of water and numerous fish. It emerges into "The Deep"
of the store, where a 5,000-gallon cylindrical tank houses three sharks and two eels..

While Floridians in the Panhandle this summer are avoiding sharks, South Floridians are actively seeking them at a new one-stop shopping fish emporium in Broward County. Big Al's Aquarium Supercenter, an 18,000-square-foot, display-centered aquarium store, opened its doors in Tamarac in June with a hair-raising demonstration of a live shark-feeding for more than 1,800 people..

Having established himself as a big fish in Canada, Allan Saul, president of the aquatic chain Big Al's, is venturing into the U.S. market. He hopes to make a splash with the U.S. debut of Big Al's Aquarium Supercenter in Tamarac. The 18,000-square-foot store, Saul's biggest to date, includes a dry goods area and a fish room, complete with a 14-foot waterfall, koi pond, and 5,000-gallon predator tank, dubbed "The Deep."

A $3 million aquarium named Big Al's will open in Tamarac this month, leaving its owners and local officials saying they hope it will blossom into a major local family attraction. Vicki Reid, executive director of the Tamarac Chamber of Commerce, said she is looking forward to the opening, which will take place a 9 a.m. on Wednesday, June 22. "I literally was awestruck when I saw the aquarium and doubly excited that the company chose Tamarac for its first such facility in the U.S.," she said..
